Examining Transcription : A Theory - Laden Methodology
نویسندگان
چکیده
Transcription is an integral process in the qualitative analysis of language data, and is widely employed in basic and applied research across a number of disciplines and in professional practice fields. Yet methodological and theoretical issues associated with the transcription process have received scant attention in the research literature. The extant literature on transcription is reviewed across disciplines, and an empirical study of transcription as used by practitioners and researchers in training is reported. Five pairs of female graduate students in a language development class transcribed a book reading session with a mother and a child. Findings showed that participants' transcripts differed in layout, quantity, and type of elements of the interaction they transcribed, conventions they derived to represent those elements, and the consistency with which they applied the conventions. It was also found that transcription decisions were linked to interpretive consequences. It is concluded that transcription is theory-laden; the choices researchers make about transcription enact the theories they hold and constrain the interpretations they can draw form their data. As it has implications for the interpretation of researchdata and for decision-making in educational practice, transcription as a process warrants further investigation. The Feasibility and Applicability of Grounded Theory Methodology in Translation Studies: Developing Translator Competence
The development of sociological approach to the study of translation makes it possible for the researchers to adopt different methodology to develop new theoretical formulations and concepts. These formulations are arrived at through the interaction with those being studied through the interpretation of real social world and meanings of the participants involved in the translation/social event....
متن کاملThe Theory - Ladenness of Observation and the Theory - Ladenness of the Rest of the Scientific Process
We use evidence from cognitive psychology and the history of science to examine the issue of the theory-ladenness of perceptual observation. This evidence shows that perception is theory-laden, but that it is only strongly theory-laden when the perceptual evidence is ambiguous or degraded, or when it requires a difficult perceptual judgment. We argue that debates about the theory-laden issue ha...

In this article, Imam Khomeini’s political theory is investigated with the Lakatos methodology. His methodology confirms the distinction between a hard core or the original skeleton of investments and experimental propositions confirms as a protective belt for the research program. Regarding this, the claim from this article is that if we understand the system of religious knowledge of Imam Kho...
متن کاملP21: Local Administration of Methylprednisolone Laden Hydrogel Enhances Functional Recovery of Transected Sciatic Nerve in Rat
The repair of peripheral nerve injuries is still one of the most challenging tasks and concerns in neurosurgery. Effect of methylprednisolone-laden hydrogel loaded into a chitosan conduit on the functional recovery of peripheral nerve using a rat sciatic nerve regeneration model was assessed. A 10-mm sciatic nerve defect was bridged using a chitosan conduit (CHIT/CGP-Hydrogel) filled with CGP-h...
